Habaneras & Tangos

MarchVivo · Ref. 06657 · 2024

This volume from the MarchVivo collection brings together remastered excerpts from Ricardo Gallén’s concerts at the Fundación Juan March in 2014 and 2017, united by their common affiliation with the habanera.

Although not of Cuban origin, the sensuality of this dance seduced half of Europe in the final decades of the nineteenth century with its sweet melody and swaying rhythm. Arriving on the continent through the ports of Cádiz and Seville, where it was absorbed by flamenco and became closely related to the tango, it took root in the imagination of Spanish and French composers as the evocation of an exotic vision of the “other” — given here its most intimate sonic voice through the Spanish guitar.
