Rethinking Guitar Technique

For Ricardo Gallén, technique has never been simply a matter of repetition or control, but of awareness, efficiency and freedom. A decisive turning point in this understanding came in the early 2000s, through his encounter with the physiotherapists of Sanat Fisioterapeutas in Valencia. That experience opened a new and lasting perspective on the relationship between the body, movement and instrumental practice — one that would gradually become central to both his artistic and pedagogical vision.

What began as an important personal discovery has, over the past twenty years, developed into a sustained and deeply valuable collaboration. Together, they have explored new ways of understanding the physical foundations of instrumental playing, bringing these insights into both Gallén’s teaching and his broader artistic work. This collaboration has also led to the creation of a highly successful course on guitar and physiotherapy, which has attracted not only guitarists, but also performers of other instruments interested in a more conscious, sustainable and physically intelligent approach to performance.

This evolving dimension of Gallén’s work addresses posture, movement, coordination, tension patterns and injury prevention, not as isolated technical concerns, but as part of a broader musical vision. By reconnecting physical organisation with sound and expression, he offers musicians a more sustainable, intelligent and deeply integrated path toward technical mastery and artistic freedom.
